Specialist Science Status

 Science College

Westfield was one of the first Specialist Science Colleges in the country and we are extremely proud to have achieved this status.

Designated specialist science colleges are at the forefront of innovation in science and mathematics and we use our specialist status to help raise standards of achievement and the quality of teaching and learning across the school.

We have high expectations of our pupils and offer a wide range of challenges and opportunities in a variety of courses and extra-curricular activities. The school offers Triple Award and Double Award Science at GCSE and pupils with particular aptitude can take GCSEs in Science, Maths and ICT at the end of Years 9 and 10. All our pupils participate in science events and we have excellent provision for all including those that are gifted and talented, those with special needs and all with an interest and desire to learn more about Science. Year 9 pupils are selected each year to work with a Scientist in a Researcher in Residence Project. Those selected are chosen as much for their enthusiasm and dedication as for theiracademic ability.

We also encourage our young people to pursue science and mathematics beyond 16 – so that they will progress into employment, further training and higher education according to their individual abilities, aptitudes and ambitions.

  The world's smallest snowman

"In a bid to create festive cheer, scientists at the National Physical Laboratory have created the world's smallest snowman and other micro-delights.snowman

This colourful snowman would be dwarfed by a human hair – at 0.01 millimetres across it is only a fifth the width of a typical strand.
It is made from two tin beads, which are normally used to calibrate electron microscopes, welded together with platinum."

The school promotes the sciences very well by giving pupils a strong scientific and technological foundation

on which to build.”
